  • The USCIS officer will ask you up to 20 civics questions during your interview.
  • You must answer 12 out of 20 questions correctly to pass.
  • Questions are asked verbally; you answer out loud, no writing required.

About the Official Civics Questions

This page lists the official USCIS civics questions and their accepted answers, organized by topic so you can study systematically. Reading through the full set is one of the most effective ways to prepare, because the questions an officer asks at your interview come directly from this list.

Use this page to read and review, and use the practice test to quiz yourself under interview-like conditions. Some answers — like the current President, your governor, or your U.S. representatives — change over time or depend on where you live, so always verify those specifics with official government sources before your interview.

How it works

  1. 1Browse by topic. Questions are grouped into American Government, American History, and Integrated Civics (geography, symbols, and holidays) so related facts stick together.
  2. 2Read the accepted answers. Each question shows the answer or answers USCIS accepts. Where more than one answer is correct, you only need to give one at the interview.
  3. 3Watch for answers that change. Some answers depend on the date or your location — current elected officials, for example. Confirm these on official government sources close to your interview date.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to memorize every answer?
You should be comfortable with the full list, since your officer can ask about any of it. Focus extra attention on questions whose answers change, like current office holders, and on anything you personally find difficult.
Are these the official questions?
Yes — these are the civics questions published by USCIS for the naturalization test. We keep the wording aligned with the official source and point you back to USCIS.gov to confirm anything time-sensitive.
What if an answer depends on where I live?
Questions about your state's governor or capital, or your U.S. representatives, have different correct answers depending on your location. Look those up for your own state and district before your interview.
