How the writing test works
- The officer dictates up to 3 sentences; you must write at least 1 correctly. You write the sentences on a piece of paper provided by the officer. As soon as you write 1 correctly, you pass. You won't always be asked all 3.
- Minor spelling errors are acceptable if the meaning is clear. USCIS allows small spelling mistakes as long as the officer can understand what you wrote. For example, writing 'goverment' instead of 'government' would likely be accepted.
- All words come from the official USCIS writing vocabulary list. No word outside this list will be dictated to you. Practicing the spelling of every word on the list is the fastest path to passing.
- Capitalize proper nouns and the start of sentences. Names like 'Abraham Lincoln', 'Congress', and 'United States' should be capitalized. Beginning each sentence with a capital letter is expected.
- Write legibly. Your handwriting must be readable. The officer must be able to read what you wrote. Take your time. There is no time limit for the writing portion.
