How the Civics Practice Test Works

During the naturalization interview, a USCIS officer asks civics questions out loud from the official study list and you answer from memory. This free practice test recreates that experience so the format feels familiar before your real appointment — no account, no payment, and no personal information required.

The standard practice round draws questions at random from the official USCIS civics question bank and asks you to reach a passing score, just like the real test. You can type your answer or reveal the official answer and grade yourself, and you get immediate feedback after every question so you learn as you go.

How it works

  1. 1Pick a mode and start. Choose the standard practice round, or the 65/20 mode for applicants who qualify for the special consideration available to those 65 or older who have been permanent residents for 20 or more years.
  2. 2Answer from memory. Read each question and respond the way you would in the interview. Type your answer for automatic checking, or reveal the official answer and grade yourself honestly.
  3. 3Get instant feedback. After each question you see the accepted official answer, so you reinforce the correct response right away instead of repeating mistakes.
  4. 4Review your results. At the end you see your score, which questions you missed, and whether you reached a passing number — then retake it as many times as you like.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are on the civics test?
Officers select questions from the official USCIS civics list, and you need a set number correct to pass. Always confirm the current number of questions and the passing score for your test on USCIS.gov, since USCIS sets and occasionally updates the format. Our practice rounds let you drill the full official question bank either way.
Is this practice test free?
Yes. Every tool on N400Test.com is completely free, requires no account, and asks for no personal information. You can practice as many times as you want.
Do I have to type my answers?
No. You can type an answer for automatic checking, or simply reveal the official answer and grade yourself. The real interview is spoken, so practicing your answers out loud is a good habit.
Will these be the exact questions on my interview?
We use the official USCIS civics questions, so the study material is the same one your officer draws from. The specific questions you are asked are chosen by your officer on the day of your interview.
