How the reading test works
- The officer shows you a card with up to 3 sentences. You must read at least 1 sentence correctly aloud. The officer stops as soon as you succeed. You won't always be asked all 3.
- Reading correctly means the officer can understand you. You don't need a perfect American accent. Minor pronunciation errors are acceptable as long as the sentence is clearly understood.
- All words come from the official USCIS reading vocabulary list. No word outside this list will appear on the card. Memorizing the vocabulary words gives you a huge advantage on the real test.
- Read slowly and clearly. There is no time limit. Take a breath before reading. Reading slowly and clearly is better than rushing through the sentence.
- If you make a small mistake, keep going. Self-correcting is allowed. If you stumble on a word, you may try again. The officer is looking for overall comprehension, not perfection.
